Trauma Scene Decontamination
USA Decon’s
Trauma Scene Decontamination course is made up of two days of classroom
instruction that includes certifications in Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard
Communication, Personal Protective Equipment, Confined Space, and more. In
addition to these two days in class, multiple remediation techniques will be
utilized to satisfy various customer requirements and environments.
The classroom discussions will cover
the Engineering, Work Practice, and Administrative Controls framework. Through
this framework, the students will be exposed to Engineering Controls such as
Personal Protective Equipment (OSHA
1910.132), Bloodborne Pathogens (OSHA
1910.1030), and Respiratory Protection (OSHA
1910.134).
Upon certification in Bloodborne
Pathogens, students will be compliant with
OSHA1910.1030 and issued compliance card. This certification will be issued
by a Medic First Aid Certified Trainer (Registry Number 46035).
Work Practice Controls such as
Confined Space (OSHA
1910.146) and Hazard Communication (OSHA
1910.1200) will also be discussed. Administrative Controls, such as scheduling
due to safety concerns, are included.
Case studies are utilized to build a
frame of reference to the compliance material. During case studies, students
are encouraged to estimate what inputs are required for the projects covered and
to develop a plan of action to address the challenges of the scene.
Throughout the safety and compliance
framework instruction, the applicable federal and state regulation will be
addressed. Federal regulation, such as the Resource Conservation and Recovery
Act, is explained in its development and its relevance to the operational tasks
required on
trauma scenes.
Environmental law enforcement is
primarily up to the local officials. The state law that governs the actions of
these local officials is explained along with the civil and criminal penalties
of non-compliance.
Operational instruction will concentrate on the compliant processes, tools,
equipment, chemicals, and documentation required for this type of work.
The mock-scenes encountered by our
students may consist of a murder in a bed, a suicide in a bed, a murder/suicide
in a den on a couch and recliner, a
human decomposition on a recliner with
blood spill on a couch penetrating the tile floor,
biohazardous contamination in a bathroom, and a
tear gas affected environment.
This course is taught by
experienced technicians who have spent years in the field remediating
environments affected by
biological issues created by
homicides,
suicides, accidents, and
human decompositions. Actual scenes harbor the risk of
biohazardous pathogenic infection. This risk is communicated to students
along with the importance of
infection control.
